1. Why doesn't my house not show up on the map?
The KGIS database consists of 1400+ maps (or tiles), which collectively cover all of Knox County. The original maps were produced from 1985-derived aerial photography. Since 1990, KGIS has annually re-flown a portion of Knox County, updating those maps that have undergone significant change (e.g. new roads or subdivisions) since they were last updated. When a map is updated from the new aerial photography, all new and modified buildings, roads, utilities, etc. are digitized onto the map.

But KGIS does obtain aerial photo coverage for entire quadrants of Knox County on the same annual and cyclical basis. It is therefore possible for the aerial photo layer to be more recent than its associated digital “planimetric” layer.

So take a look at the aerial photo Map Theme to see if your house is visible there. If your house is not visible on the aerial photo layer, then it was probably built since the photography was last flown for that portion of Knox County.

To see when your area was last flown and updated, click the "Get Map Date" link in the upper right hand border of the map. This will tell you the last time the current displayed map area was flown (see Aerial Photography section) and updated (see Planimetric Data section).

2. Why can't I find my address?
The address information on this web site is from the Knoxville / Knox County Metropolitan Planning Commission’s (MPC) official addressing database. Addresses are assigned and maintained by MPC in accordance with the Uniform Street Naming and Addressing System Ordinance adopted in 1990 by the Knoxville City Council and the Knox County Commission. If you are unable to find your address, it is possible that MPC does not recognize that it exists, or does not recognize your street name spelling. For more information please contact the MPC Addressing Counter at (865) 215-3258 or email them at addressing@knoxmpc.org ..

5. Why is my house sitting on the property line?
There are two primary reasons this problem occurs in the KGIS data set:

a.) Property Data and Planimetric Data (e.g. buildings, fences, edge of pavement, etc.) are captured by different departments and different mapping processes. Property data is captured by the Knox County Property Assessor's Office. They digitize property data from surveyor-supplied plats, or from deed descriptions, on a daily basis. Planimetric features are maintained by KGIS on a 4-year cycle (see question #1 above) and captured from aerial photography. Since property lines are obtained from a more current, and sometimes more accurate source (surveyed plats), it is possible for them to overlap planimetric data, which is captured at best once every four years.

b.) In 1985 when the original data was captured for KGIS, property data was digitized from old hand-drawn maps and “warped” to best-fit with the aerial photography. As surrounding properties are surveyed and registered with the Knox County Property Assessor's Office, the property boundaries are adjusted as accurately as possible. Other sources for error include: incorrect or inadequate deed/plat information, software bugs, data entry errors.

For questions about property boundaries, especially related to inaccurate map depictions, please contact the Knox County Property Assessor's Office at (865) 215-2360.

6. How often is the data on this web site updated?
KGIS makes every effort to update this data every two weeks. However, during the initial deployment of the web site there may be longer delays between updates. The last translation date is always shown on the Property Details page and Data Currency page.

8. Will other mapping themes be available in the future?
Yes. We have just finished adding a Political Theme which includes voting precincts as well as local and state districts. We are currently evaluating user needs to determine which data layers to add.

9. Why does the Owner Card and Map get chopped off when I print?
Both the owner card and the maps are optimized for online viewing. You will need to adjust your print margins to correctly print owner card or map.
Select File from the main menu.
Select Page Setup.
Change the left and right margins to .5".
Click OK.

If the headings on the Owner Card do not print gray shaded you may need to adjust your browser settings. These are different for all browsers and print drivers but the following suggestions may be helpful:

Internet Explorer 5:
Select Tools from the main menu.
Select Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab.
Click the box that reads Print background colors and images.

Internet Explorer 4:
Select View from the main menu.
Select Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab.
Scroll to the Printing heading.
Click the box that reads Print background colors and images.

Netscape:
By default Netscape should support background color and image printing.

10. Why can't I print a map from using the print button?
When you hit the KGIS print button you should get a new window popup and the map will draw inside of the new window.

Solution for Windows XP and SP2 users:
Select Tools from the IE main menu.
Select Pop-up Blocker
Click the Pop-up Blocker Settings tab.
In the Text Window under Address of Website to allow type in www.kgis.org.

11.  Why can't I see Map Coordinates on the bottom of the map?
Map coordinates are seen in the status bar on the bottom of the map window. Whenever you move your cursor the map coordinate will change. If you are using Internet Explorer Version 7 (IE7) you will have to add KGIS as a trusted site. Solution for IE 7 users:
Select Tools from the IE main menu.
Select Options
Click the Security tab.
Click the Trusted Sites icon.
Click the Sites button.
Take the check off of the check box beside Require server verification.
In the Text Window under Add this Web site to the zone type in www.kgis.org
Click the Add button.
Click the OK this window. Close your IE7 window and open a new one.

12.  Why does the warranty deed print as a blank page?
This is usually caused by the tiff image has been opened by Apple's Quicktime pluggin. Try the steps below to fix the printing problem.

1) Remove the Quicktime Program.
2) In Windows Explorer click on Tools, then Folder Options, next File Types, make sure the File Type .TIFF has a drawing application. Example - Microsoft Office Document Imaging.

3) Next, download and re-install Apple Quicktime if you want to use this application for viewing video files.
