| State Senate / House Boundaries Updated - Tuesday, January 31, 2012 The realigned State of Tennessee Senate and House districts maps have been updated on KNOXnetWhere, KGIS's interactive mapping site. The boundaries were realigned based upon the 2010 Census data, and are administered on the KGIS by the Knoxville MPC.
To view the boundaries, just click on the "Select a Map Theme" drop down box in the upper right corner of the KNOXnetWhere application; then select either the State Senate or State House options from the Political Districts Theme. |

| KGIS Owner Card is Changing its Look - Thursday, January 12, 2012Users of the KGIS Lite and MPC Cases applications will see a new format in the KGIS Owner Card report beginning Friday, Jan. 13th, 2012 to accommodate the newly implemented workflows of the Knox County Property Assessor's Office.  However, the Owner Card in the KNOXnetWhere app, and in the Online Reports section of www.kgis.org will retain its old format until these applications are upgraded sometime later in 2012. | Deed Recorded Dates are not currently accessible - Thursday, January 12, 2012KGIS users should be aware that the Deed Recorded Date will not be available to KGIS applications (such as the Property Map & Details Report, and the Property Details sections of the Interactive mapping web sites KnoxNetWhere and KGIS Lite). Hopefully this is temporary until such time that the new Appraisal system can make this information available again to KGIS users. (However, the Deed "Sale Date" is still accessible via the KGIS Owner Card. ) |

| Commission, School Board boundaries Updated - Tuesday, December 20, 2011 County Commission and School Board district boundaries have been adjusted on the KGIS websites to reflect the 2011 approved re-districting, which called for the boundaries of both school board and commission to be coincident with one another. The site provides an enhanced map navigation experience, and introduces some new features and tools, including a full suite of measurement options. | MPC’s Proposed Hillside Protection Maps added to KGIS - Tuesday, March 08, 2011 MPC has added the proposed Hillside and Ridgetop Protection Areas to each of KGIS's interactive mapping websites: KnoxNetWhere , KGIS Lite and MPC Case Mapping. This map will enable residents to determine whether all or portions of their property falls within the Hillside Protection Area through searches by address, parcel ID number or owner name. | Mobile Home and Apt Complexes added to Subdiv Search - Tuesday, February 22, 2011KGIS's subdivision search tool, which allows one to locate subdivisions and condominium complexes within KGIS' mapping web sites, has been enhanced to now include mobile home parks and apartment complexes. The subdivision search can be accessed in  KGIS's newest site KGIS Lite by launching the " Search By: Other..Subdivision" option from the drop-down list at the top of the page. |

| City unveils South Knox Businesses website - Monday, January 03, 2011The City of Knoxville has created a new website (www.southknoxisopen.com) devoted to helping folks continue to shop, work, and play in those areas most impacted by the temporary closure of the Henley Street Bridge. The website includes a Google Map showing the many businesses along the Chapman Highway corridor. |

| KAT System Map honored for Top Cartography - Wednesday, October 20, 2010The 2010 Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) System Map was honored at the annual TNGIC East Tennessee Regional GIS Conference. The map, produced by MPC GIS Specialist Ryan Justice, received first place for category of Best Cartographic Presentation. | Knox Sheriff publishes crime data to Web Maps - Friday, August 20, 2010The Knox County Sheriff's Office is now utilizing an online crime-mapping website, CrimeReports.Com, to help relay crime incident data to the general public, including sex offender registry locations. The Sheriff's Office generates latitude / longitude (XY) coordinates for each incident by using MPC's address database (hosted on the KGIS system), and then plots those locations onto the Google-hosted map. Reports and other tabular data are also provided. (Note: Only crimes outside of the City of Knoxville jurisdiction limits are currently shown in the application).
Also, in its efforts to enforce the statutes of Tennessee Code Annotated (TCA) 40-39-211 in regards to sexual offenders, the Knox County, TN Sheriff's Office has created a map theme in the KGIS Lite mapping site called "TCA Restriction Zones", to highlight areas which are "off-limits" to sexual offenders. | Building Permit map theme added to MPC Cases map viewer - Wednesday, June 09, 2010A Building Permit map theme has been added to the MPC Case Mapping application on www.kgis.org. To access, select the Online Data: MPC Case Mapping option from the menu in the upper right portion of this page. The BUILDING PERMITS theme can then be accessed via the Themes pulldown menu (which is located in the upper right portion of the Case Mapping application). |

| Google Street view and Microsoft Bird's Eye View added to MPC Case Mapping. - Tuesday, May 18, 2010 A tool has been added to the MPC Case Mapping application to let the user see the Google Street view or the Microsoft Bird's Eye view. To start MPC Case Mapping click here or click on Online Data in the upper right of this page, then in the drop down menu click on MPC Case Mapping.
How to use:
1) Click Settings in the upper right to set the tool to Google Street view or Bird's Eye view, Next choose Bird's Eye View and then click Submit.
2) Zoom in to where you can see the edge of pavement.
3) Click on the camera tool on the tool bar.
4) Place you cursor at the location of the area of interest.
5) Click the left mouse button. |

| PDF Maps of Knox County - Tuesday, April 06, 2010 KGIS has published various PDF maps of Knox County. Examples are: City Council, County Commission, School Board, Zip Codes, etc.. Now users can click on the links and print or save the pdf maps on their home computer. Click on the map image to the right or follow the link to the Products tab and then click on PDF Maps of Knox County. |

| Tips - Tricks! How to access Google Street View from KGIS - Wednesday, February 24, 2010Google and Bing are becoming indispensable to map users. Some folks may not realize that KGIS's newest mapping application, KGIS Lite, allows for quick access to these invaluable sites. In other words,  while clicking on the KGIS map for such things as Property or Owner information, one simply has to choose the " Picture Viewer" tool in order to display Google's Street View or Bing's Bird's Eye View maps of the same area. The photography was flown back in March 2009 as part of KGIS's landbase update project with Sanborn & Co. KGIS is scheduled to receive updates to its other landbase data (incl. building footprints, edges of pavement, hydrography, topography, etc.) in 2009. |

| KGIS Receives Special Achievement in GIS Award - Monday, July 20, 2009 San Diego, California - July 15, 2009 - The Knoxville Knox County KUB GIS (KGIS) in Tennessee received a Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award today at the 2009 ESRI International User Conference (ESRI UC) in San Diego, California. The organization received this honor for its vision, leadership, and innovative use of ESRI's geographic information system (GIS) technology. KGIS was selected from more than 300,000 organizations worldwide and recognized during today's SAG awards ceremony for making extraordinary contributions to our global society.
KGIS serves more than 1,000 Knoxville, Knox County, and Knoxville Utility Board (KUB) employees across 30 government agencies and departments and provides an online GIS to the area's resident population of more than 400,000. The centrally administered GIS is maintained by personnel who are located throughout the various enterprises. The GIS database is the primary source for cadastral and parcel ownership transactions, site addresses and street names, utility assets and easements, jurisdiction boundaries, and emergency response zones. read more.... |

| MPC launches a new Case Mapping Viewer - Wednesday, July 01, 2009The Metropolitan Planning Commission and KGIS have collaborated on the launch of a new "beta" online application which provides access to boundaries and details for about 17,000 MPC cases dating back to the early 1980’s through a mapping interface. Try the MPC Case Mapping Viewer here: http://www.kgis.org/mpccases. This version of the application is considered a beta or a preliminary release. At this point, all major functionality that will be included in the application is present, but users may experience some issues related to stability and performance. Internet Explorer 7.0 is the only fully supported browser, although older versions may work with limited or inconsistant functionality. | Introducing KGIS LITE! - Wednesday, June 10, 2009A new, "beta" version interactive mapping site, called KGIS Lite, has been added to KGIS.org. It is a streamlined version of the KNOXnetWhere site, and is built upon the latest generation technology to provide a more seamless and faster experience, along with access to  the most current data. It has been designed primarily for Internet Explorer 7, so other browsers may experience some problems, or speed issues. | City Block numbers added to Details Results information - Monday, April 20, 2009KGIS has now made City Ward and City Block numbers available to the general public on its public website, www.kgis.org. This new information is now included under "Parcel Information" on the right side of the screen. It can be accessed by activating the "IDENTIFY" icon and then clicking inside the subject parcel boundary. This new ability should be helpful to many users, especially surveyors and engineers. |

| KGIS GIS Upgrade Project comes to a close - Thursday, January 29, 2009KGIS's three-year-long M2E GIS Upgrade Project (with CH2M Hill) officially ended at a ceremony today in the Small Assembly Room of the City County Building. As part of the project, more than a half-terrabyte's amount of data (comprised of >195 unique feature categories) and 20 distinct GIS applications were transitioned to ESRI's most recent and industry-standard software platform. During the ceremony, KGIS also recognized 26 different City, County and MPC employees who contributed mightily to the project in their roles as data contributors. And on a final note, the project was also under budget! |

| Website Links to Plat Docs have been removed - Monday, November 17, 2008 The Register of Deeds Office has requested that the recently- implemented links to the recorded PLAT DOCUMENTS be removed from KGIS's websites. However, KGIS users (both inter-departmental and general public) will still be able to access the recorded DEED DOCUMENTS (or what KGIS users may know as "Owner Documents"). In the meanwhile, if you need to access the recorded plat documents ( or what KGIS users refer to as "Parcel Documents"), you will need to contact the Register's Office or access them via their subscription service. |

| Register of Deeds' Document Links Added to KnoxNetWhere - Tuesday, July 01, 2008The Knox County Register of Deeds Office has provided KGIS (and KNOXnetWhere) users with new "hyperlink" tools which provide access to recorded deed documents. By integrating the Registers' computerized imaging system with the Knox County Property Assessor's database (hosted on KGIS), users are provided with a map-based entry point to recorded deeds (from which some of mapped parcel boundaries are derived). | USGS Quads (1:24000) Theme added - Wednesday, May 07, 2008KGIS has created another map theme within its KNOXnetWhere mapping site specifically for  display of the United States Geological Survey ( USGS) 1:24000 scale topographic maps (also known as the 7.5-minute quadrangles). Within the theme, users will be able to display current-day KGIS features (such as parcel boundaries) on top of the USGS quads, which continue to be a great cartographic reference even though they have not been updated since the early 1990s, when the USGS 1:24000 program ended. | Vintage 1935 Aerial Photos added to KnoxNetWhere - Tuesday, April 29, 2008Some of TVA's 1935 Aerial Photography of the City of Knoxville has been added to the Aerial Photo Theme within KGIS's KNOXnetWhere mapping site. The source photography was scanned and rectified by the MPC to fit with the KGIS basemap. To display the photos, users will need to turn on the appropriate "Aerial Photo 1935" map layer within the Layers tab of the site. | Property Assessor makes transition to new GIS software - Wednesday, April 09, 2008 On April 1, 2008, the Knox County Property Assessor's Office became the latest department to transition its map-related workflows to KGIS's new GIS platform, which is based upon the ESRI ArcGIS software suite. There are 187,000+ parcels of land in Knox County, and the Mapping Department of the Property Assessor is using the Sidwell Company's Parcel Builder™ software (the first organization in Tennessee to do so!) in order to manage its many land and ownership records. This is all part of KGIS's three-year project to transition more than 29 mapping-related City and County workflows to the latest technology. |

| Bird's Eye View of Knoxville via Microsoft LiveSearch - Thursday, January 17, 2008 Microsoft's Google-like map website , called Live Search Maps, has added some very detailed 3-d imagery for Knoxville, allowing users to virtually fly-around Knoxville from the air. And they've added most of the downtown buildings into their 3-d Virtual Earth models (which requires a download of their plug-in viewer). The Bird's Eye view photography was flown in Dec 2006 / Jan 2007 timeframe. |

| Airport Authority becomes newest KGIS Partner - Wednesday, November 21, 2007 KGIS welcomes its newest data sharing partner: The Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (MKAA). The Authority owns and manages the Downtown Island Airport (DKX) here in Knoxville, along with the much larger McGhee Tyson Airport located in Blount County. The Authority plans to use the KGIS landbase data to assist with its inventory of assets and infrastructure. Welcome Aboard MKAA! |

| 2007 Aerial Photos added to KnoxNetWhere - Friday, June 01, 2007The Aerial Photo Theme of KGIS KNOXnetWhere? has been updated with new 2007 photography from Pictometry, Inc. While the photography is not quite as geo-positionally accurate as KGIS’s 2003 photography, it does provide users with a more current view.

| School Zone Search tool updated with 2008 Zones - Tuesday, May 22, 2007The school zone search (under the Online Data pulldown menu above) has been updated to include both 2007 and 2008 High School Zones. Simply key in your street address, and the results will show two entries under the High School column - the first of which represents the 2007 High School zone; the second one indicating the 2008 High School Zone. To actually view the High School zones on a map, you'll want to initiate the KNOXnetWhere? interactive mapping tool, and then select one of the High Schools options from the Select a Map Theme pulldown menu. |

| New High School Zones added to KnoxNetWhere - Thursday, May 10, 2007The new High School zones have been added to the KnoxNetWhere mapping website. To display the new school zones click on the KNOXnetWhere? link and change the theme by clicking on the dropdown box under Select a Map Theme and select "high schools & zones 2008" subtheme under the Schools Theme. The map also shows the location of the new Hardin Valley School that is scheduled for completion in 2008. |

| KGIS receives 2007 GIS Champion Award - Thursday, April 26, 2007 KGIS, and its Executive Director Keith Stump, was presented with the 2007 GIS Champion Award at the recent Tennessee Geographic Information Council (TNGIC) Annual Conference in Chattanooga, TN. The award recognizes outstanding efforts at promoting the use of geographic information systems (GIS). In recognizing Keith and KGIS, it was noted that Knox was an early adopter of GIS back in the mid '80s, and that it still serves as a successful model even today. TNGIC has a membership of more than 400 members from all corners of the State. |

| IDS - GIS Data Viewing Product on CD - New Version - Tuesday, April 24, 2007 KGIS has a new version of the IDS product. The IDS CD is a self-contained map viewing product that contains GIS viewing software and data for all Knox County. | New City Control Points Theme - Monday, March 19, 2007A new theme has been added to the KNOXnetWhere? mapping website. City Engineering maintains survey control points throughout the city which can be seen on the City's website : http://www.ci.knoxville.tn.us/engineering/civil/surveypoints.asp. The mapping data is hosted by KGIS. A round disk is placed in concrete for each one of these points for surveyors to reference. The city added over 70 new points and flagged the ones destroyed by construction or demolition. The City maintains over 1100 active survey control points. |

| Map Coordinates added to KnoxNetWhere - Monday, March 19, 2007The State Plane and Longitude and Latitude coordinates have been added to the status bar at the bottom of the KNOXnetWhere? map frame window. Now as you move your cursor over the map you will see Easting, Northing, Longitude (Degrees, Minute, Seconds -DMS), Latitude (DMS), and Longitude (Decimal Degrees - DD), Latitude (DD).
For Internet Explorer Version 7 users to see the information in the status bar you will have to add www.kgis.org as a trusted site.March 7, 2007 |

| Sidwell's Parcel Builder added to KGIS - Monday, March 19, 2007KGIS and the Knox County Property Assessor's Department have selected the Sidwell Company's Parcel Builder™ suite of mapping software to be part of its upgraded GIS software solution. Over the next two years, KGIS (as part of its M2E software upgrade project with CH2M Hill, Inc.) will be transitioning more than 29 mapping-related City and County workflows to a new ESRI GIS software architecture. The Sidwell Parcel Builder software will work in tandem with the ESRI software, thereby providing enhanced productivity tools to the Property Assessor's Mapping personnel, who on average commit more than 25,000 parcel and ownership transactions per year into the KGIS Property (Cadastral) database. Sidwell is an 80 year old mapping company, whose customer base is primarily in the Midwest. KGIS and Knox County will be Sidwell's first Parcel Builder customer in the state of Tennessee. | Property Dimensions and Parcel Numbers added to KNOXnetWhere? - Thursday, January 18, 2007Parcel number text, land hooks, and property dimensions are now viewable within the Base Theme of the KNOXnetWhere? interactive mapping site. When the user "zooms in" to a subdivision for instance, the parcel number and land hook features automatically display on the map. | New Watersheds Theme - Friday, January 12, 2007KGIS has added a new Watersheds theme to the kgis.org KNOXnetWhere Inter-net mapping site. The user can view the new theme by selecting the Watersheds from the themes list. When the map displays zoom in to see the different Watersheds for Knox County. Zoom into the Beaver Creek watershed and the Beaver creek sub-basins will display. Click on the Find a Watershed search tool, select a watershed from the drop down list and the watershed will be highlighted and information about the watershed will be displayed. | Sanborn to provide County-wide map update - Friday, January 12, 2007KGIS has contracted with Sanborn, Inc. to acquire County-wide digital aerial photography every 3 years, and to completely update KGIS's planimetric / topographic data over a 6 year period. The project resumes KGIS's annual landbase map update program, which began back in 1990, but was temporarily halted in 2003 in order to re-map the entire County. | SR-475 Knoxville Regional Parkway Study Area updated in KnoxNetWhere - Tuesday, October 24, 2006The recommended alternative for the SR-475 Knoxville Regional Parkway alignment that the Regional Parkway Design Resource Team will forward to TDOT can be seen on the KGIS.org website in the BASE Theme. The proposed Knoxville Parkway would connect I-40/I-75 southwest of Knoxville, Tennessee to I-75 north of Knoxville.
The footprint of the alignment includes the proposed right-of-way for the Parkway as recommended by the Knoxville Parkway Design Resource Team and accomodates cut and fill and interchanges at I-40/75, Pellissippi Parkway, Clinton Highway, and I-75.

| West Knox and Knox Chapman utilities join KGIS - Thursday, July 13, 2006The list of KGIS partners has now grown by two more! West Knox Utility District (WKUD), which provides water and wastewater services to the Northwest areas of Knox County (and a small portion of Anderson County) and Knox-Chapman Utility District, which serves the area south of the Tennessee River (including portions of Sevier and Blount counties), both signed data sharing agreements with KGIS.
