The KGIS Gazetteer is a place set aside for information about the "places" of Knoxville and Knox County, Tennessee. A single source for all geographic place names does not exist. Nevertheless, the maps found at KGIS contain many place names, and on these Gazetteer pages, we've attempted to provide some resources and links to the various Place Name information housed and referenced throughout our maps.
Webster's defines a gazetteer as "a book or list that is arranged in alphabetical order and gives information about places".
Each categorized list of place names contains quick, navigational hyperlinks to KGIS Maps and its Place Name Search tool.
While it is difficult to keep abreast of ALL of the various and sundry named places throughout our community, especially in regards to the many and frequent changes to those named places, it is our hope at KGIS that this Gazetteer provide at least a glimpse at many of them.
