The purpose of an Urban Tree Canopy (UTC) assessment and report is to identify the amount of canopy cover within a defined area. UTC is comprised of the leaves, branches and stems that cover the ground when viewed from above. It is also meant to identify other land classes to inform future planting sites. This information will allow for increased canopy cover in the future and a healthy urban forest. This viewer acts as a visual representation of the 2021 UTC report. The tree canopy assessment viewer makes it possible to observe the multiple layers that are identified in an UTC within Knox County. Users will be able to discern various land cover classes, including UTC, other vegetation, impervious surface, bare soil, and water. The report compares changes in UTC within Knoxville and Knox County from 2008 to 2018. Viewers will be able to look at these metrics by commission districts, watersheds, city council districts, elementary school districts, city and county parks and public lands, census tracts, census blocks, neighborhoods, and public service maintenance zones. Users will also be able to view areas suitable and unsuitable for future planting. Tree Canopy Viewer
