On August 15, 2025 KGIS celebrated its 40th Year Anniversary during the scheduled KGIS Policy Board Meeting. Two separate proclamations (one by Knox County Glenn Jacobs and the other by Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon) recognized KGIS and declared it as KGIS Appreciation Day.

KGIS Recognition of 40th Year Anniversary

BELOW is the posted AGENDA Item #2 from the August 15., 2025 KGIS Policy Board Meeting:

RECOGNITION OF KGIS 40TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY

  • On August 9th, 1985, a Tri-Party Agreement was signed between Knox County, the City of Knoxville and Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB). That agreement called for the development of a "computerized mapping system (CMS)“ to support the public need.
  • The new organization later adopted the official name of: “The Knoxville – Knox County - KUB Geographic Information System” - aka KGIS.
  • Over these past 40 years, the system has grown into a true collaboration amongst organizations, departments and co-workers. Today, the Policy Board seeks to recognize this 40th Year Anniversary.
