2024 Aerials Now Available

Preliminary aerials for 2024 added to KGIS Maps

A new set of "preliminary" aerials from Winter 2024 have been added to KGIS Maps These aerials are a by-product of the oblique photography capture conducted by  EagleView\Pictometry (on behalf of the Knox County Property Assessor's office and KGIS). The more accurate version of these aerials will be made available later this year.

These 2024 aerials can be toggled on by selecting "2024 Aerial Preliminary" theme in the  "Historical Aerials" section of the Maps panel. ( The default "Aerial" map theme of KGIS Maps still reflects the 2022 vintage aerials.)

While the 2024 aerial image is an accurate representation of ground conditions (at the time taken), it has not been fully rectified and should ONLY be used with the following understanding:

  • The imagery has NOT been fully rectified to ground control and is not as accurate as a true orthophoto.
  • The imagery may have breaks, gaps, and other issues. This is especially true around elevated features such as bridges and overpasses.

2024 Aerial Oblique images are also available. Access them via the Launch...Pictometry tool in the blue command strip at the top of the KGIS Maps page.

Esri's Official Position on Silverlight and Flex

Dropping NEW Development Efforts on Silverlight and Flex for HTML5

Esri posted an interesting article on their developer's blog site the other day.  Basically, they are dropping new development efforts for the Silverlight API and Flex API.  With the rise in mobile devices, which don't support either Silverlight or Flex, Esri has decided to focus all new development efforts on the JavaScript API and HTML5.  They are planning to support both (including bug fixes) in the coming year but they will not be adding any new functionality.  Here is the link to article: http://blogs.esri.com/esri/arcgis/2014/02/21/esris-roadmap-for-web-developers/

How does this affect KGIS? (click here to read more)

Google Street View Issue

Google's API change is causing problems for some browsers

Google recently updated their Google Maps Javascript API, which KGIS is using to display street view maps.  This change is  causing some older browsers to distort the street view picture.  Below are two examples:

Internet Explorer - this is the view that you may see inside of most Internet Explorer (IE) browsers.  Note the "bubble" effect - this should be a straight section of road. Internet Explorer 10 and prior will definitely have this problem.  IE 11 may or may not have this issue, it seems to be behaving differently on different machines. Click the image to the left to see the full size image.
Google Chrome - the Chrome browser fully supports the Google Maps API and therefore does not have the same problems displaying the street view image. Click the image to the left to see the full size image.

Map Legends and City Block links added

KGIS Maps

KGIS Maps now has support for legends!  Each map's legend can be toggled on by clicking the "Legend" tab.  The legends are dynamic and will change as one "zooms in and out".  However, it should be noted that some overlays (e.g. TCA Restriction Zones, Soil Types, etc.) may appear slightly different in the legend than they do on the map.

We have also added a link to the City Block Information documents as maintained by the City of Knoxville Technical Services Department.  When you identify a parcel located inside the City Limits,  the "Full Parcel Details" information will contain a "City Block" hyperlink to the PDF document.  Click here to see a screen shot showing the link's location.

KGIS Day Event draws approx 300 attendees - Monday, November 28, 2005

KGIS's 20th Anniversary Event was not only well-attended, but it was also an excellent showcase of the various ways that our respective departments are using GIS technology. Chris Halcomb and the Event Planning Committee did a wonderful job of pulling all the details together to make for a smooth operation. And Dwight Kessel's "KGIS Champion" remarks made note of the "spirit of cooperation" that led to KGIS's initial founding. KGIS Day 20 Years Brochure.
